An approval rating survey was conducted by Fauji Reporter on a controversial decision of Gen Dalbir Suhag; Ex Army Chief to have accepted an govt offer to go as New High Commissioner of Seychelles.
Seychelles is small island country in Indian ocean having a strategic importance to India. Controversy erupted as the offered position is held by junior diplomat.
It is not for first time that ex army or services chiefs have been appointed ambassadors or high commissioner of India in a foreign country. However Gen Dalbir as army chief was perceived by few to be soft with the govt on certain professional issues.
Survey triggered a debate with many civilians defending the decision, but most comments coming from military veterans and military families were critical to extent of making observations of he being rewarded for compromising with many critical issues of army to please the govt.
While survey was in progress, media reported Gen Suhag; Veteran making an statement of highlighting the strategic importance of the given assignment. Which further drew questions of why then the assignment has not been upgraded by govt if it is so critical?
It may please be noted that appointment of army chief is an institution and actions of army chief while in service and post retirement are closely observed by community of military families.
20% approval rate in the survey surely does not get endorsement of the environment. However the survey may not so accurate due to obvious reasons but it does indicate people disapproving it. Probably it is being seen as reward by politicians to him for he having kept quite on many key issues concerning army, while he was chief.
Such surveys are healthy way of collecting mood of people which helps leaders in their work assignment.
